Roughan & O’Donovan were engaged by Meath County Council NRDO to design and prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for a 5km dual carriageway bypass of the village of Slane in County Meath.
The scheme includes a bridge crossing of the River Boyne cSAC with a total length in excess of 100 metres. Due to the sensitivity of the Boyne Valley and the proximity of the scheme to Brú Na Bóinne World Heritage Site (Newgrange) the bridge had to be sympathetically designed. The ecologically and archeologically sensitive valley, which contains the River Boyne, the Boyne Canal, towpath and a number of weirs, meant that it was particularly important to minimise the environmental impact in locating the bridge support piers. Geophysical survey and archaeological testing of 2 sites was undertaken prior to completion of the EIS, which at the time was a first for a national road scheme in Ireland.
An Appropriate Assessment was prepared by Roughan & O'Donovan due to the potential impact on the River Boyne & River Blackwater cSAC.
