The scheme involves 7km of new single carriageway providing a bypass of Belturbet in County Cavan. The scheme crosses the River Erne at its northern end as well as running adjacent to the river for much of its length. A significant issue is the numerous bogs along the route, most notably Aghnaguig Bog, part of the Lough Oughter and Associated Loughs cSAC.Due to the complications with undertaking any works in Aghnaguig Bog (cSAC) Roughan & O’Donovans' environmental team engaged in extensive consultations with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Coillte (part of the EU Life Project).
Detailed method statements have been prepared for all ground investigation works and hydrogeological monitoring has been ongoing since preliminary design stage. All works in proximity to the River Erne, in particular the bridge crossing, have been extremely carefully managed due to the fisheries value of the river. The design of the 150 metre long bridge has been developed to protect the river, and with a main span of 70 metres, will be the first extradosed bridge in Ireland and one of limited number of such bridges worldwide.
