Roughan & O’Donovan Innovative Solutions ROD-IS is a subsidiary company of ROD that specialises in complex and innovative structural and bridge engineering solutions for the international market. The company is a collaboration between Roughan & O’Donovan, Professor Eugene O’Brien (University College Dublin) and Dr. Alan O’Connor (Trinity College Dublin) which allows clients to access the significant advances in research in bridge & structural engineering in the fields of loading, design and assessment which have occurred in the last 20 years. ROD-IS provides a consultancy outlet for this advanced research which has not previously been developed to a commercial level and which capitalises on Ireland’s reputation as leaders in this field. While the methods applied are very much project specific, for existing bridges their application can accurately quantify required maintenance interventions for individual circumstances and better determine aspects such as remaining economic life. Research indicates that in many cases, existing assessments are conservative and lead to unnecessary maintenance expenditure and even premature replacement which are both costly for the client. For new bridges, the application of probabilistic design & assessment for specific circumstances accurately determines design requirements leading to optimal bridge design and whole-life cost savings.
