About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for geotechnical engineers with two to six years’ relevant experience to join our dedicated and talented geotechnical group in delivering complex geotechnical design solutions as part of our overall multidisciplinary team.

ROD has a proven track record, experience and expertise across a range of technical disciplines, including transportation, bridges, buildings, retaining structures, slope stability, hydrology, hydrogeology, through all project stages.

Examples of recent detailed geotechnical solutions include rock/soil slope stabilisation works, ground improvement schemes over soft ground, observational monitoring of construction on peat, cofferdam piling and bridge foundations. In addition to devising and overseeing ground investigation contracts and earthworks/foundations designs for buildings/bridges and climate resilient infrastructure, successful applicants will be responsible for supporting our design teams through the provision of specialist geotechnical inputs.

Current and recent projects include:

Duties

  • Identifying preliminary geotechnical risks for projects and option selection analysis
  • Supporting various design teams with specialist geotechnical inputs
  • Analysing ground conditions and design parameters for shallow and deep foundations for buildings, bridges, linear infrastructure etc.
  • Interacting with transportation and environmental colleagues to improve routes, drainage requirements, flood defences and coastal protection works
  • Assessing borrow and quarry materials for reuse as embankment fill, drainage, concrete and pavement aggregates for mass haul analysis
  • Pavement foundation design in accordance with TII / UK DMRB
  • Assessing and designing soil improvement techniques for soft ground
  • Attend and supervise investigations, earthworks and foundations on site

Requirements

  • Degree in civil engineering / engineering geology
  • Knowledge of construction techniques for piles and retaining walls
  • Knowledge of soft ground techniques, stability and soil reinforcement methods of particular interest
  • Knowledge of earthworks, soil improvement or deep foundations for linear infrastructure
  • Experience of geotechnical investigation contracts
  • Fluent/highly proficient in spoken and written English 

Key competencies/attributes

  • Strong site investigation project management skills and experience
  • Strong geotechnical design skills
  • Proven track record working with design teams in a busy work environment
  • Flexibility
  • Good report writing, MS Word, MS Excel and CAD/BIM  skills

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification in geotechnical engineering or related field, MSc or PhD for example
  • Membership of a recognised professional body in the geotechnical field in UK/Ireland
  • Full driving licence
  • Knowledge of quarry/borrow materials used as aggregates and pavement design
  • Experience in Irish/UK glacial till soils, including major road/rail projects
  • Construction experience in earthworks, soil improvement and deep foundations
  • Experience in flood protection projects or marine environments
  • Knowledge of ground remediation/potentially contaminated materials
