Summary

Roughan & O’Donovan provided civil and structural engineering design services for a 45m x 55m high-bay extension to a high value storage facility.

Solution

The project consists of 2300m² of 10.5m high bay portal frame construction, fully braced in both directions.

The adoption of ‘jumper’ beams allowed for only four internal columns to the whole building, maximising flexibility in how the new extension space could be used.

Parts of the existing portal frame members were converted into trusses to resist snow drift loadings.

SuDS measures

  • Permeable road surfacing
  • Filter drains for groundwater recharge
  • Transmittal swales
  • Surface water storage and attenuation

Challenges

A high ground water table and a fire boundary condition requiring specialist detailing of facade secondary steelwork represented key project challenges.

Services provided:

  • Structural engineering design
  • Civil engineering design
