Summary

Roughan & O’Donovan provided civil, structural, environmental and planning services for a 1.9km long fully segregated walking and cycling facility along the historic River Boyne.

  • This project can be truly described as a world class attraction, which will support our Boyne Valley Tourism Strategy and our local and national economy.

Solution

A recycled black plastic boardwalk formed a key element of our design solution, providing a low carbon footprint, low maintenance, cost-effective solution that minimises impact on the surrounding environment.

At 3.6m wide and 866m long, the boardwalk is the largest of its kind in Europe.

Challenge

The presence of invasive alien plant species (IAPS) within the footprint of the works presented a challenge.

Our Japanese Knotwood Management Plan resulted in an approx. 90% kill rate in year one, which allowed construction of the greenway to commence with minimal disruption to the contractor.

Highlight

Our design of the greenway minimised its encroachment into the floodplain and the footprint of the River Boyne SAC and SPA and its impact on the integrity of the European site.
