ROD Graduate Development Programme
Roughan & O'Donovan's two-year graduate development programme will help you fast-track your way to professional engineer.
Join us to:
- Gain valuable experience quickly by working on high-profile projects

At the end of the programme, our team of mentors, chartered professionals and technical experts will be ready to help you reach your next career milestone - becoming chartered.
How our programme is designed
- You'll choose a minimum of four six-month rotations from across a range of discipline areas:

What makes ROD's programme exceptional?
You'll gain valuable experience and skills by working in multidisciplinary teams on four varied and challenging rotations, each of six months duration.
A programme tailor-made for you
In your first week, your programme mentor will help you decide what you want from your career and tailor your path through the programme to best fit with your ambitions.
Team mentors invested in you
In addition to your dedicated programme mentor, you'll be assigned team mentors who'll provide hands-on, practical support as you progress through each rotation.
Learning and development
Most of your learning will be on-the-job, supported by in-house and external training courses, including Engineers Ireland’s CPD Certificate in Professional Engineering
What do you look for in a graduate?
We look for graduates who:
- Hold a minimum of a level 8 degree in civil or structural engineering or equivalent
- Are keen to learn and can take the initiative
- Can build relationships with colleagues
- Have solid analytical skills
Will there be a job for me at the end of the programme?
From day 1, your contract of employment is permanent (subject to the standard probationary period).
Where will I be based?
You’ll be based in our head office in Arena House, Arena Road, Sandyford, Dublin 18.
You may be offered a 3-6-month site rotation within the Dublin area during the programme.
How’s the social life?
We’re a friendly group.
We have with an active sports and social committee who like to organise wellness weeks, comedy club nights, surfing weekends, step challenges and much more.
You’ll find lots of ways to get involved.

Meet our graduates
I graduated with an MEng in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast.
I joined Roughan & O’Donovan to gain experience across a variety of civil engineering projects.
Rotating through different projects and teams has taught me a lot - from working with the different personalities within teams, to coping with increasing levels of responsibility. It has also helped me to figure out the area of engineering I’m most passionate about.
I’m only at the start of my career but, by being proactive, I know I can keep learning and progressing.
I'm a graduate of both Trinity College Dublin and Nottingham Trent University.
I’m really enjoying the experience of working here - everyone is incredibly dedicated and driven.
My team members listen to my opinions and encourage me to share ideas. It feels like I have a real voice in the company, which pushes me to work harder.
I’ve been given lots of responsibility within project teams, but it’s never overwhelming. There’s always a mentor or senior engineer close by to answer a question or check my work.
I’ve taken every training opportunity that has come my way, including Engineers Ireland’s Certificate in Professional Engineering, and that has really helped my confidence at work.

I'm a graduate of Trinity College Dublin where I undertook a degree in civil, structural and environmental engineering.
At Roughan & O’Donovan, I work alongside some very talented and ambitious engineers. They encourage me to take on greater challenges and responsibility with each new project, and that’s really helped my progress as a graduate.
There have been times when I’ve felt under pressure to deliver, but that’s part of the job. And, there’s always an experienced mentor available to discuss the issues and provide reassurance.
On a personal level, I really enjoy Roughan & O’Donovan’s sports and social club events – comedy club nights and climbing walls are a great way of getting to know your colleagues.
I'm a graduate of Cork Institute of Technology where I undertook an MSc in Structural Engineering.
I think Roughan & O’Donovan’s graduate development programme has to be one of the best. I don’t know of any other engineering consulting company in Ireland offering the breadth of exposure that this programme provides.
Instead of being pigeon-holed into one particular specialism too soon, the programme has allowed me to work in multi-disciplinary teams across a range of civil engineering projects.
I’m learning about all the different career paths and roles open to me while getting the kind of experience that will really stand to me when I apply for chartership.
Meet our mentors
I have been working as a spatial planner for over 10 years. My work involves strategic policy development and analysis, undertaking environmental impact assessments, and providing advice on a range of project-specific planning and development issues.
I enjoy helping my mentees improve their technical skills and performance at work. By actively engaging on projects and pursuing continuing professional development opportunities, I can see their individual strengths and interests develop.
I encourage my mentees to knock on someone’s door or call them up, if they have an issue to discuss. In fact, our open-plan office layout with low partitions, and junior and senior staff strategically seated together, supports an open communication style.
I have worked as a road designer, both office and site based, for 30 years.
During that time, I have been involved in a wide variety of road schemes in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
I am glad of the opportunity to share my knowledge and expertise with new graduates.
For me, a good mentor-mentee relationship is a two way street; it requires time and commitment on the part of the mentor and a willingness to do what it takes to become successful on the part of the mentee.
I’ve spent 40 years working in a civil/structural design office, so I think it is important to help less experienced technicians and engineers in any way I can.
I am often asked questions on building construction, structural design or on drawing production, and I always try to answer in a patient, friendly way.
I think a mentor's actions and values are studied closely, so I try to lead by example. For me, the best way I can do this is by being there when someone needs help.
As a senior geotechnical engineer, I am regularly challenged to characterise sites and design earthworks/foundations for all sorts of roads, bridges and structures.
As a mentor, I guide others through finding the right information and selecting relevant parameters for analysis and design.
I like to involve mentees in the process of making important decisions by helping them to consider the constraints and then evaluate the most suitable options. This really accelerates their learning journey and prepares them for future challenges.
