Works aimed at rehabilitating Tyrconnell Bridge, a 4-span steel structure carrying Tyrconnell Street over the River Eske in Donegal town, are set to commence in early 2018.

Constructed in 1895 as a railway bridge, it comprises welded steel girders with riveted buckled steel plates to form the deck, resting on battered squared coursed rock-faced masonry sub-structure.

The steel structure has significantly deteriorated over the years, and the deck must now be replaced.

Using the original masonry abutments and piers, which are in much better condition than the steel structure, Roughan & O'Donovan has designed a new steel composite deck and parapets for the bridge, which will respect and replicate its original appearance.

Stephen Harper, Roughan & O'Donovan, described Tyrconnell Bridge as:

A great example of late 19th-century engineering skills and a potent reminder of Donegal's industrial heritage.
