Ardee Ambulance Base, a single-storey building on the northern edge of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ardee, Co. Louth, has won the 'Wellbeing' award at the RIAI (Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland) Awards 2023, announced on Thursday.

Designed by Moloney O'Beirne Architects, the building comprises offices and rest areas for staff, a garage for vehicles, a wash area and external covered parking for ambulances.

Clad in Iroko Teak, and elevated by two meters, the building offers pleasant views of the surrounding parkland. It is approached by a curved access roadway which circles the impressive trees.

The RIAI described the project as "a simple rectangular pavilion with [an] efficient layout, generous floor-to-ceiling heights and large windows providing a sense of calm which is much needed by the users who often witness traumatic scenes."

Roughan & O’Donovan (ROD) provided civil and structural engineering design services on the scheme, and worked closely with Moloney O'Beirne Architects, IN2 (M&E) and McGahon Surveyors (QS) to ensure its successful delivery.
