Summary

Roughan & O’Donovan and ROD-IS, in collaboration with Europe’s top road ecology experts, produced a handbook of recommendations for optimising wildlife-road mitigation in road planning.

Project partners included Wageningen University and Research Centre and Aarhus University.

Solution

We combined our extensive experience in road design, maintenance and procurement with that of our project partners to produce an easy to use, well illustrated and practical handbook on roads and wildlife.

In developing the handbook, we focused on new developments in legislation, policy and procurement and monitoring approaches to assess whether road mitigation goals are currently being met.

Challenge

The development of an ecologically adapted, safe and sustainable transportation infrastructure system represents a significant challenge for ecologists, road-planners and civil engineers.

We need to develop adequate tools to assess, prevent and minimise the mortality, barrier and fragmentation effects of roads on protected habitats, wildlife and ecosystems.
