Summary
Roughan & O’Donovan (ROD), in joint venture with AECOM, was initially engaged by Donegal County Council as technical advisor on this scheme to improve a 1.2km section of the N13, from the west end of the village in County Donegal to the border with Derry. The route is the most strategically important border crossing in the Northwest, linking Donegal and Derry, and forms part of the European TEN-T comprehensive network.
After carrying out the option selection studies that led to the Emerging Preferred Option in 2023, we were subsequently engaged by the council to lead the project through the preliminary design (Phase 3) and statutory process (Phase 4).
The project is co-funded by the European Union, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Department of Transport.
Background
In excess of 16,700 vehicle movements (per working day) pass through the village of Bridgend and cross the border in both directions. This is in excess of the capacity of the existing single carriageway, causing congestion, pollution and an unattractive environment for pedestrians.
Project objectives
- Improve safety on the N13 for all road users
- Minimise adverse environmental impacts, making the village of Bridgend a better place to live
- Improve journey times and reliability
- Improve connectivity with the surrounding area
- Support the local economy
- Enhance the transport network, in particular the TEN-T Network
- Provide improvements in accordance with National, Regional and Local Planning Policy
Highlight
The removal of significant traffic volumes from the centre of Bridgend village provides an opportunity to retrofit significant active travel provision within the village, improving connectivity to the local school, businesses and community facilities for residents.
Challenges
The proximity of industrial and commercial premises to the proposed route requires the development of innovative solutions to minimise impacts on their operations and on the buildings themselves.
