Roughan & O’Donovan provided structural engineering design services for a new intensive care unit in Our Lady of Lourdes hospital, Drogheda.
The project involved the refurbishment of the existing 4th floor cardiac wards to create a modern intensive care unit (ICU) with a total area of 425m2.
Significant additional plant had to be installed to service the new unit, resulting in additional requirements for access points, plant support mechanisms and cladding supports.
During the works, the ribbed slab construction of the existing building was found to be badly corroded and a repair method devised.
A special support frame was also designed to enable the contractor to install and adjust new medical pendants to service the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Additional works were incorporated during the project to upgrade the existing high dependency unit.
Significant structural works were required to allow the development to proceed while maintaining the structural stability of the original 1960's building.
