Summary

Roughan & O’Donovan acted as sub-consultant to ARUP for the design of the 6km city centre section of the Swords/Airport–City Centre Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme.

Highlight

Securing consensus from key stakeholders on the routing of the project, which traverses the civic spine of the city between Parnell Square and College Green, represented a major achievement.

Solution

Our design solution comprised:

  • Provision of continuous bus lanes and high quality widened cycle lanes over 6km of streets in the centre of the city
  • A major public transport interchange at College Green, encompassing significant streetscape upgrades to Westmoreland Street, D’Olier Street and College Street
  • Detailed analysis of loading, taxi and parking facilities along the route
  • Integration of 32m long BRT platforms into constrained existing footpaths

Challenge

Our bus and cycle lane enhancement proposals needed to respect the city centre’s Georgian character while maintaining general traffic access and circulation.

Services provided:

  • Engineering design
  • Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP)
